I put the cool in cardcraft

It was sometime mid-Neogene, Standard Four to be more specific, when I used to be the purveyor of, among other things, handwritten cards.

It was not a venture that would lead towards prodigious riches, but I earned enough to keep my heels well greased in chip rolls and other such brain-building fare offered by the school’s tuckshop.

My gran’s sister-in-law, fascinated by this venture, ordered a card for R5. (I immediately pegged those ronts to be spent on the latest Archie comic digest – how much do they sell for these days? Does anyone know?)

I promised Jubeida Mami I would deliver on my next visit to the East Rand.

But as the pocket money ran out, so did my entrepreneurial fervour, and I never did get around to filling her order.

Until now. Fifteen years later.

Would you say she got her money’s worth?

This weekend nurtured my nose for glue, and I now appreciate a fine vintage of Bostik Clear.  Other outputs:

naqiyahs card 2 A birthday card for my sister-in-law Naqiyah.

If this cardcraft thing is your bag, click on the flickr button in the sidebar for other things I’ve put together.

Jeez, it’s all a bit precious hey? I’m like three seconds away from making doilies and chairback covers.

Is the date on your camera wrong or are you getting back into your card making. I thought they were awesome and felt kinda sad when I saw the dates were two years ago which would mean you have stopped your card making.
    Great work, truly inspiring.

My new mantra is “promise less, do more”, thanks to @Bash on twitter.

So, here’s my deal, email me colour specs, favourite things (so i have an idea of theme) and I’ll get on to it when I have some space :)

@Fatima a bloggirl meetup sounds brill. June would be perfect for me. I’m onboard.

    keep it up.

  12. Aasia says:

    Hey,

I would buy a couple of these, For birthdays, I usually crawl odd little places for truly unique cards. Why should I, when I can pay a soon-to-be freelancer. Seriously though. I’d pay good money for them.

another friend of mine did me some personalised stickers, using my “manga” and saying with love from Aasia. For work gifts it’s awesome. You should do them!

  13. naqiyah says:

gorgeous !! … i simply loved the fabulous fabulosity of it all!
the colours blended so well together, and the pretty little gems just finished it all off :)

i see paging through my album has helped lots :) layering is the most important thing, so stock up on those foamy dots and squares … remember to sign off your name at the back, just because!

  14. Azra says:

  16. Princess says:

Ohhh these are stunning!!! Can I buy some :)

Inshallah we making Dua’a that your mum gets well pretty soon.

  17. Fatima says:

Wow…you really inspire me to get off my backside and do all of my fave things.
Too bad I’ve sent it all away to Plaasland.

I think Jubeida Mami certainly got a lot more than she bargained for.

Perhaps it’s time you should put them on etsy? :)

I made some baby vanity cases for some expectant mothers as gifts before I sent them off. Painted it, made little clay moulds of hearts, etc. I should’ve taken photo’s.

  18. Zahera says:

Wow, love them! Youve done a really good job on them. I had a friend in college who used to make cards, they were so cool! I never understood why she didnt try to get them on the market because her theme was so funky and original- she sold amongst friends but that was about all. Off to check your flicky.

  19. Waseem says:

Hope your mum gets well soon

I think if I were in Archie I would be Jughead, except for the woman hating and overeating … hmm … that basically is jughead, maybe someone else then. Saaleha you’re such a Betty :D or maybe midge but there was no character depth there

  20. Saaleha says:

handmade and handwritten – the ones from back then were really just a piece of card with penned scribbles on the front and some arb missive inside. No other embellishment, but for the silly wit of a ten year old.
Thanks Mash, your flickr stream rocks.

  21. Mash says:

they’re nice though, I saw them on flickr earlier

  22. Mash says:

    Don’t you mean handmade
