If it grows in a bush/shrub or fairly smallish tree and tends to thrive in shadier spots in the garden then it's from the azalea/rhododendron branch of that family. Azaleas smell amazing, but their seeds are highly toxic. It's fruit or seed/berry yielding then it's from the Ericaceae branch of the Rhododendrons, more closely related to heather and then the "fruit" is some kinda variety of berry, usually blue-/cran-berry, but depending on your soil type might be inedible cos of highveld climate going between extremes fairly quickly and not allowing the berries to fully ripen. Also, if it's a self /bee created cross with an azalea, those berries are toxic. And surely you have at least one SLR? Or is the owner possessive?
